Who is Satan?

Satan means adversary. Satan is also known as the devil, great dragon or ancient serpent.

  • Rev 12:9. The great dragon was hurled down--that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.

His Beginnings

Satan is a created spirit being, he has a beginning. But he began as an angel, an Arc angel of God who was an anointed cherub, perfect in beauty and full of wisdom from the day he was created.

  • Ezek 28:14-15 You were anointed as a guardian cherub, for so I ordained you. You were on the holy mount of God; you walked among the fiery stones. You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created till wickedness was found in you.

God did not create Satan

God did not create the devil. He created a perfect angel who chose to become wicked. This shows that angels have free will like us. They can choose to become proud and wicked. There were also other fallen angels who are now called demons.

This perfect angel who became the leader of the other fallen angels was also known as the morning star in Isaiah 14:12. Because of his sin, he fell from heaven and was cast down to earth. So evil came to earth. Adam and his wife were lured into eating the forbidden fruit. Evil became the master of man.

God did not create evil on earth or in heaven above. He did not plan that evil will be a part of his creation. But God cannot be surprised because he is all knowing--- knowing the beginning and the end. He knew how evil came to be. He saw and knew the future, even the coming forth of the evil one and his works. But why did he allow evil to spring forth and cause many to suffer? Evil was a choice that the devil started out of his own free will when he started scheming evil, wanting to be like the Most High. Isa.14:14. God who is loving allowed the devil to prey on man, wreck havoc on man's peace and protection. But the truth is, God provided man the way, the truth and the life to overcome evil, put the devil under his feet. God gave his Son to champion us in this battle vs. evil. We have everything we need to be victors: free will, truth, and authority to protect us from the power of Satan who cannot move nor afflict us if we choose to. Now shall we begrudge God who allowed Satan to have the liberty to dupe man? Shall we blame God and tell him to get rid of the devil so that there will be no trouble on earth? God is perfect. Whatever he planned, thought of, or allowed to happen is perfect. Even this matter on the devil who is allowed to roam and prey on man is a perfect situation for us to choose victory and not defeat. This is a perfect situation for warriors to see victory in their battles. This is a perfect scenario to see the power of God and his works manifest for his purpose, a perfect opportunity to see God glorified.

The Beginnings of Satan's Wickedness

This perfect guardian cherub became proud.

Isa 14:12-14 How you have fallen from heaven, O morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations! You said in your heart, "I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of the sacred mountain. I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High."

Satan, highest ranking Demon

When he was cast out from the Mount of God, he took other angels with him and he became their king, prince, leader and master.

In Ezekiel 28, he is also addressed as

  • King Tyre--- Ezekiel 28:11
  • Expelled guardian cherub--- Ezekiel 28:14
  • Prince of this world--- John 16:11
  • Prince of Demons--- Luke 11:15
  • Beelzebub
(Gr. form Beel'zebul), the name given to Satan, and found only in the New Testament (Matthew 10:25; 12:24,27; Mark 3:22). It is probably the same as Baalzebub (q.v.), the god of Ekron, meaning "the lord of flies," or, as others think, "the lord of dung," or "the dung-god." Ref: Easton's Bible Dictionary.

EZEKIEL 28:12 "Son of man, take up a lament concerning the king of Tyre and say to him: 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: "'You were the model of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. 13 You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone adorned you: ruby, topaz and emerald, chrysolite, onyx and jasper, sapphire, turquoise and beryl. Your settings and mountings were made of gold; on the day you were created they were prepared. 14 You were anointed as a guardian cherub, for so I ordained you. You were on the holy mount of God; you walked among the fiery stones. 15 You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created till wickedness was found in you. 16 Through your widespread trade you were filled with violence, and you sinned. So I drove you in disgrace from the mount of God, and I expelled you, O guardian cherub, from among the fiery stones. 17 Your heart became proud on account of your beauty, and you corrupted your wisdom because of your splendor. So I threw you to the earth; I made a spectacle of you before kings. 18 By your many sins and dishonest trade you have desecrated your sanctuaries . . ." (NIV)

Satan has Limited Power

He is a spirit being who can come in various forms such as a dragon, serpent, or an ugly creature.

  • He is not everywhere

He is not like God who is everywhere. He roams thruout the earth. Job 1:6. He cannot enter the third heaven for he was cast out from there. When he came to present himself before the Lord, I believe that he was only at the gate of heaven or somewhere near there and that God was not speaking to him face to face for he was expelled from the presence of God. God can speak to us anywhere and God can speak to Satan or to any demon anywhere.

  • He cannot create

He uses truth to tell a lie. He did not make a plastic fruit to entice the woman that God gave to Adam. Because he cannot create, he uses creation to deceive or to make illusions.

  • He offers abundance, prosperity and healing

He uses the wealth and abundance on earth to get the souls of the greedy and selfish, those who want to get rich no matter what for they are willing to sell their souls to satisfy their lust for riches and pleasure. He uses peace and healing to the troubled only to get their souls for eternal torture and sufferings. He gives revelations to fortune seekers and gives them financial success in their careers and ventures only to own their souls forever.

  • He gives power and anoints his chosen ones

There are specific persons ordained by the devil to become his faithful servants on earth. He chooses a bride for himself, one he has chosen to own for his wicked pleasure. He uses lust, the counterfeit love to enslave his chosen ones for his wicked purpose. His chosen ones were marked as his own thru the covenants made by persons who chose Satan as their lord and god, those who sold their soul as payment for honor, power, and riches.
